Switching from Dreamhost… bye bye

After much issues with our website, SpiralTrac, going down we’ve decided it was time to to switch away from Dreamhost. Looking around at various high quality web hosts, we ended up choosing RackSpace for our new hosting company.

Since Dreamhost was also where we stored our source code, using their SVN server, we also had to find another place to store all of our tasty code. For that, we have decided to go with Beanstalk.

RackSpace will provide is with a high availability hosting solution as well as offering the option of hosting both .Net and PHP applications with in the same hosting account. This was a BIG plus, in case we needed to host a clients .Net OR PHP application. They even offer an option to auto-bill your hosting clients, this way you don’t have to deal with monthly billing of your hosted clients.

Beanstalk has a very simply system for taking care of your source control needs. They have a clean online web application that allows you to browse your code as well as other nifty options to make our lives happy and breath easier. With automatic backups and the ability to automatically FTP code to our hosting company through FTP, this should be a fun system to work with. Eventually I’ll also look into the API they provide to see if we can eventually incorporate that into our products.

During the next week we are working on moving our website over to our new hosting solutions. If any issues arise during the process, I’ll post more about it here.
